Green House Project

The National Association of REALTORS® is not the only trade organization to have picked up on the movement to protect our environment and health through wise building practices. The National Association of Home Builders has taken a very active role in promoting the construction of green homes.

Its local chapter, the Homebuilders Association of Northwest Connecticut has teamed up with the Litchfield County Board of REALTORS®, Inc. to oversee the construction of a green home located at 96 Tognalli Drive in Torrington. Tognalli Drive is a new cul-de-sac off Clearview Avenue.

The goal of the project is build a house following green guidelines that is comparable in price to other new homes in the community. Trade offs that may increase the price of the home but lower its maintenance costs are acceptable to the project’s goal.

The home is owned and being constructed by T & M Building Company, Inc., a long-established Torrington based company. It is being built on a “spec” basis and is available for purchase.

The LCBR Green Committee has taken an active role in researching green building practices in order to advise T & M Building in the design and construction of the home. Its Building Workgroup will focus on design considerations and will work hand-in-hand in with the builder in selecting the energy-wise features of the home.

Each step in the design and construction process will be documented in print or electronically by a Documentation Workgroup. The knowledge and experience obtained by the committee in this endeavor will be shared with the public and other organizations interested in learning more about sustainable housing.
